Consignment & Junk

A couple of weeks ago, I headed south on the Parkway....you Jersey folks know what I'm saying. I wanted to check out a consignment store (it shall remain nameless) that I had been looking at online. They have really lovely things like this

Great accent pieces

This Altar table made me weep

A pair of perfection

The lines stared to get blurred between consignment and new retail. I was not exactly sure which I was looking at. You certainly could not tell by the price.

It all felt like full retail to me. I haven't paid full retail since I bought my wedding dress.

The staff had a bit of an attitude. In all fairness, if they summed me up as "not their customer", they were correct.

This was definitely vintage and fabulous.

After I left the overpriced "used furniture" store.....I stopped at another place I had been checking out online. It was the polar opposite of this shop

It was a warehouse that has "Saturday's Only" days.
When I see pictures online, I have expectations in my head.

I did not expect Bi-Polar-ness

Stuff stacked on stuff, piled on more stuff.

Some people enjoy this level of digging.....I might, on a warmer day. It was freezing, and I wanted a latte.

I was starting to feel claustrophobic.

Really, you think there is a resale value on these pillows? Can you say bed bugs!

I tried to keep an open mind, but I forgot my Purell.

As usual...I'm out! Do you shop in places like either of these? I have decided that I am somewhere in the middle. Today, I am off on another CL adventure. I have a really great video for Video Sunday.

Have a great weekend!

That is so funny, I would be looking for a latte too, esp on a cold day:). Although I do enjoy looking through junk, ALONE:). I think it is kind of my therapy. Have a great weekend! Jen

Those pillows-disgusting! I frequent both of those kinds of places and at least the high end consignment shop I go to reduces their prices every 2 weeks so the only decent price is months away. Of course, if it's a really great piece it won't be there in a month! Why would people have a 'tude' seriously. Isn't a sale a sale? There's no need for unkindness in my book.
Have a great weekend.

I enjoy that level of digging but no pillows. I also carry lysol, hand-sanitizer, and anti-bac wipes. The stuff at the high end shop was awesome but I really love a "junk" shop. I have gotten some of my once in a lifetime "scores" there.

I might have bed-bug nightmares about those pillows! ;)

Too funny! I like junk shops and antique stores, you just have to keep an open mind.

You totally made me chuckle! Gotta give all of these places a try to find your favorites, so good for you! I guess one needs to be prepared for these adventures, Purell, lattes and all!

As fun as "antiquing" is, it is also exhausting! I always end up with a headache from the dust in the stores like the second one you mentioned. And the first kind are just as frustrating - I love everything but the price tags are ridiculous!! I love your line "I haven't paid retail since I bought my wedding dress"! If it isn't a good deal, I am NOT interested!!

Enjoy your day!! xoxoxo

You are too funny! I can appreciate them! :) Those pillows reminded me, my son (14) asked if I washed the sweater from Goodwill I used to make a pillow!

I enjoy window-shopping in such places - the first store and usually only look at the glassware, china and small decorative items in others like the second store. Truly though I love to envision the potential in what is on offer. THe first store has immaculate pieces, clearly!

I go to a consignment store on a regular basis that has stuff stacked and it's a digging situation. They are so nice in there and they do have great things. So many designers make this place an every day stop. That's how fast things move in and out. They have things priced to sell. That first store you visited has amazing things! Too bad they are so expensive and don't have a pleasant attitude!

I am in for the second one...do you see that bar cart in the 2nd last photo sigh? I hate having those pretty woman experiences...you know when I have a bun in my hair, had no coffee etc basically look like I spent a night in a shelter. Hey I have money to spend here lady! Grr. Hope you key'd their cars...no that's wrong.

I don't mind a bit of digging, but I tend to not like climbing over things to 'browse'.

I'm a fan of junk shops; I love the hunt and I love a good deal. I see something I absolutely need in almost every photo.

Linda, you are so funny.I like junk/thrift shops, but I expect to get really good deals when I have to work so hard. Have a lovely weekend!

Usually the higher the dust and the piles, the lower the price so I will dig if it's worth it. I do plan on figuring out where the second one is so I can visit it next summer when I have to go to Philly :). Perhaps the people in the first place have such an attitude because they have to deal with people telling their prices are too high , and they know the people are right.

somewhere in the middle too. But I guess, if I went to the 2nd store in the summer with some Purell, I could find some treasures too. :-)

Yeah, in the middle but leaning toward the junky cheap place.
