Don't Buy it...DIY it

Did you happen to catch the Danny Seo One Kings Lane Sale

I like Danny, and wrote about him here. One of his items for sale caught my eye....this one

An upcycled serving tray. I like how whimsical it is. The bird finial is a great touch. What's not great about it? The price....$299.

I have seen this type of stacking done on older craft shows. Here is an easy way to do it.
Find a figurine for the top....I like this swan found on eBay

available here

Next some plates

One

available here

Two

available here

Three

available here

Now the cups

Last one

available here

Glue them together with this

And that would give you a custom upcycled 3-tier serving stand. It's that easy. I don't know about you, but I want to make one. In fact, I probably have some dishes I can use.

I love this!! I inherited Don's aunt's china and it's a little too dainty for my taste ... but would be a fantastic addition to this little serving piece!!

Hmm. I have to think about how I could do it to suit my taste. I prefer simplicity to whimsical. I think demitasse cups would work well leaving more surface area for cupcakes. Its all about the cupcakes.

I agree $299 for this item is a little steep! Looking forward to see the finished product!

I get so excited about some of the upcoming OKL sales UNTIL I see the prices. You're really showing us here just how highly marked up some of the items are!

This is a great idea! I have all sorts of "one piece" china laying around.....just need to find that bird or finial.
Cheers,

Hi Linda! Its so much nicer to have one made out of plates that are important to you, and a fabulous topper, like the one in your picture. Great idea! Hope all is well friend,

I have seen some cute cake stands with a similar vibe...but the figurine at the top nails it. I agree the prices are not very nice in those sites. And truly good DIY is so much more fun and you get more emotionally attached to it than if you bought it. Great idea here!

Great idea. I'd like to use graduated sizes with a saucer on top though, in his example the middle area is too tight. I imagine my husband trying to grab something from that middle section and the whole thing would go down big time:) Make sure to show us a pic if you make one!

I totally love the idea of using old plates that have some meaning. This would be so fun as the centrepiece for a table at a party!!

Linda, I love making pretty tablescapes when I entertain. I have cake stands galore. But I love that whimsical piece. My problem? Where in the world will I store all of these lovelies?
