I just need to trim it out.
Now, for the major setback of the week
Jim the contractor
Feeling over my head {pun intended}, I decided to have the crown molding installed, professionally. My favorite contractor, Joe....could not squeeze me in. My second choice, handyman Rod....was not able to come, either. So, Rod, recommended Jim for the crown molding. Note to self; when your second choice has a recommendation, that is just too many degrees of separation from your first choice!
It started off bad, and got seriously worse. After four hours of work, Jim had cut the following "test samples" for the corners and returns
Yes, what you are looking at is every possible angle combination....44, 45, 46, 47 degree angles. Why? Because Jim says, "this is how I always do it". "Your walls are not square and your ceiling is not level".
My reply
THIS CAN'T BE THE FIRST HOUSE YOU WORKED ON WITH THAT PROBLEM!!
Very calmly, Jim said, "If you know of someone else who can do this, get them".
Bye, bye, Jim.....I'm doing it myself. The next morning, I was off to Lowe's to replace the crown pieces Jim wasted with his practice cuts. While I was standing in the check out line, I received the following text message from my daughter at Tennis day-camp;
"Going inside..No one knows y...Police and Swat team came and made us leave and there are helicopters above. Don't worry it will be fine just letin u know"
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. Of course I worried for the next hour, while I texted my daughter. They received the "all clear" and returned to the courts. Later that evening, we heard on the news that an elderly man committed suicide in his backyard because of declining health issues.
I attached the bottom step in the crown treatment to the wall. By getting this as level as possible, your eye would think that the ceiling was perfectly level. Are you listening, Jim?
Next, I started applying the crown
I am about half way done with the crown....and behind schedule. Rod, second choice contractor, will be coming in a few days to hack the Ikea cabinets into built-ins. He said, "sorry about Jim, but that is how I would have done it, too". Yes, Rod, that is why you are my second choice.
Joe, I need you!
The moral of this tale, all the good contractors are busy! Now, let's go check out the others, and see if they had a better week.....Happy 4th of July, by the way.
For Week 3, go here

It looks to me that you have made great progress in an ambitious plan.
One day we should all share our contractor horror stories. Everyone has one.
I seriously laughed out loud at this entire post and then just sat back in admiration at your DIY spirit! You go girl...in solidarity this week...I had a simple two hour glass shower re-caulking project turn into a four day project, a trip to the emergency room ( for one of the contractor's- he's fine now)and us now using our guest room shower...at one point we had four workman trying to figure out how to reinstall the door that now doesn't stay attached to the wall... which now resides in my bedroom until tomorrow...lol...
You are DIY wonder woman!!! The ceiling is looking beautiful! Now you know that you should always be the #1 choice for a contractor!! Happy Fourth!
Linda, you are amazing. What skills you have! I am so freakin proud of you! I know you think you're behind, but from here it looks like tremendous progress.. you'll get it done. Wish I was there to help you-we'd have a ball.
Happy 4th, hope you take a break.

Awesome idea to do the ceiling. It adds so much character! I love it!Boo on the contractors...Ive been putting off trim for almost two years because of the corner cuts...you've inspired me..kinda..well impired me to think about doing it myself. haha Can't wait to see next week!
wow im super amazed by your skills linda. that ceiling looks AMAZING
I love your ceilings but sorry about the contractor woes....and the incident! Yikes - what a week! Looking good so far my friend :)
Eek. I wish you lived closer because i would hire YOU for m pcomng projects. You're a DIY wonderwoman.
Crown molding is difficult, even for otherwise very talented handymen. Last year, I watched a program on HGTV called "All-American Handyman". One of the challenges was to put crown molding up in a space with lots of angles. These guys knew how to do just about everything, but not crown molding. Holmes, the host, told them they could do the work very quickly, once they figured it out, but that most people never do. One did, one didn't. You definitely have the "can do" spirit that enables people to accomplish amazing things. I am eager to see what you do next.
You have made wonderful progress, Linda! Love the ceiling and crown molding! You have mad DIY skills, my friend!
Sorry to hear about your contractor though.
Anyway, hope you have a fabulous 4th of July celebration!

Wow! You are amazing! Love how it is looking!!! Happy 4th!
Wow, you had a busy week. Looks great!
Your ceiling is looking gorgeous!! It's so impressive that you can do this stuff. What a week you've had! That situation during tennis sounds like it was VERY stressful. Happy 4th!
Thanks Ann. I am having a hard time with the crown...but I don't do it for a living...Jim does.
Oy! What a week! Thank god you are killer at putting up molding - because it looks amazing. That ceiling is to die for!
Damn...girl can use some tools...I am impressed. I would definitely have to out source all of that :)
Happy 4th!
I love how you are better at DIY-ing it than some of the professional contractors out there. I love how the planked ceiling and crown are looking. Good job Linda!!!
WTGG (way to go girl) Holy Moly you are makn' it happen. Very excitin' stuff for sure. Jim was so over thinking it.
Good for you kicking out Jim.. hopefully Rob will suit you better. I think the ceiling looks great.. I am so excited to see what you do next. As for the text from your daughter.. so calm in crisis.. but when some girl shows up to a party wearing the same dress or a boy doesn't call drama ensues..
Linda, this is looking great! What a difference it makes to have a good contractor! I am glad your daughter is safe and sound!
I am in AWE, woman! Can't believe you got all that done (and I'm ashamed at my lack of progress) - all with daughter drama, too!
You're a machine!
omg! First time visitor and, so impressed! I'd hire you instead of Joe, Rod and Jim. Thanks for organizing ORC....I've been following along on some of the amazing projects.
Cheers from DC,
Loi
So true!
Welcome, Loi. I hope you did not lose power during the storm. I'm glad you are enjoying the challenge. It's a challenge.
I can't wait to see the progress on your room. That ceiling alone is mega.
Despite all of your contractor issues, it's looking great!! Can't wait to see it finished! Hope next week goes a little more smoothly.
Yikes! That's crazy, thank goodness she's safe, you must have flipped out. The ceiling is looking lovely, and sometimes, you just gotta do it yourself if you want it done right. Great job :-)
Ps did I tell you how much I like your new header?
This post cracks me up. I'm glad to hear that we've all had nightmare contractor issues!!! And, as if you needed the extra stress with your daughter's situation at camp. Love how you retell the experience. The work is looking fabulous!!!!! I'm excited to see how the planks look in the end and the crown molding is going to be awesome!
