One Room Challenge...Week Five

Hi Friends! Thanks for coming back to check in on my progress for the One Room Challenge. In case you are new to my blog, you can start the challenge here. I have so much to show you this week. If I become a little incoherent in my typing, it is because I chose working on my room over sleeping. I hope I made the right choice.

Ikea, Ikea, Ikea...what would we do without you and those names we can't pronounce?
I needed a large rug for my bedroom because this one was too small

Have you priced oversized area rugs lately?  Let's just say that I could buy two large televisions for that price, and I would enjoy them so much more....I smell an Ikea Hack!!

 I bought 4 Tarnby's

I took pictures of the process, and then deleted them from my camera. So, I recreated the idea for you here

Take note of the hole in the middle...it is going to show up again

Using an upholstery needle and upholstery thread

I began to sew the rugs together. I never watch the clock, I watch television...so this was about a Bachelorette Finale and maybe an After the Final Rose worth of work.

There is only one problem

There's that hole. Feels like a rug's version of a plumbers crack.

I have a plan, words that always make my husband grab his wallet, I will attempt the rug on rug

Amber Interior
I hope I can find one in the next week! Now let me show you other ways I have been entertaining myself. Did you ever notice these?

I forgot to ask your opinion on what to do, but so many of you liked the black version of the chandelier Beth posted about...I painted these black

....and speaking of chandelier drama

I went from this

To this

I think it needs one more coating of razzle dazzle before I bring it back in the house.

Now let's see if there is any way for me to keep you on this blog any longer....Oh, yes....the minty Malm

Isn't she cute? O'verlays and all! Do you recognize the Craigslist mirrors? This is the direction I am headed, hope I don't crash and burn along the way.

Ever since I saw this image
Shannon Berry
I have been collecting vintage Oriental paint-by-number prints

This may finally be the time to use them in a room.

Before you go, my Lowe's Gift Card Giveaway ends tonight at midnight!

Powell Brower Home is Here...Guest Post

I am so excited to have Nancy & Bethany here from

I created this board for my new blogger friend Linda, who created the One Room Challenge that we are all crazed about! By the way, the final reveal is August 1, so there are only 2 weeks left! She is so busy building, doing carpentry and making over her huge master bedroom, that I thought I'd help her out (if it were only that easy) and do a design board for her room. This is what I envision her room to look like after our many conversations of her dream bedroom.

The idea is to have a neutral palette, blush colored walls, lots of texture and layers, quality built-ins and a huge focal point of a wooden plank ceiling; finishing with pops of mint green and coral. It sounds amazing, and I hope she gets the retreat she deserves! Good luck with the final push Linda!

Thanks Nancy....I will use this beautiful design to help me pull it all together. What do all of you think? Any other suggestions?

Friday's In The Garden...Bougenvilla's

There are some plants that I definitely took for granted when I lived in a warmer climate. As many of you gardeners know, you just can't grow everything...everywhere. Of all the perennials I miss, I would have to say that Bougenvilla's are on the top of the list.
source
They grow like weeds in many parts of the country. In fact, my parents took theirs out because they kept getting too big. Here in NJ, you can get them but you would need to overwinter them.....and that is a real pain. I did try for two winters, and it just wasn't happy.

Here are some of the fabulous colors they come in

One Room Challenge...Week Four

Hi Friends! Thanks for coming back and checking in on my progress for the One Room Challenge. If this is your first time on my blog you can start the challenge here. Before I get into the details of the week, I want to thank Emily Clark for featuring the ORC ladies here, and here. Your hospitality was appreciated.

Are you wondering who showed up this week? Me too!

Vinny my painter came! I love Vinny, he is my first choice in painting. He painted my dining room ceiling

He came with two other guys, and the three of them really knocked it out. Before I show it to you , I must tell you that Vinny is not a huge fan of the plank ceiling treatment. He kept saying..."It's a look". I realize that this is not the most popular choice for New Jersey, but in my mind....I live at the beach.

Here is my high gloss plank ceiling

Another view

When he was done, I told him it was so beautiful I could cry. Vinny looked scared. He didn't exactly understand that reaction....buy you do! He also did not understand what a blog was. As you can see, the walls were rolled by said painter, too. Once I have a competent person at my home, I don't want them to leave. Are you like that?

As long as you are looking at my uneven windows....what say you for window treatment?  That bookcase on the left is being moved downstairs, BTW.

As for the built-ins...let's just say I'm still hacking away

The cardboard backs bothered me so much that I added a layer of luan wood. Yes, I will be painting them...still deciding on that, too. I realize there are only two more weeks, so now might be the time to come to terms with what won't be getting finished. Eh, I'll worry about it next week.

As for the trimming out on the built-ins

I added a crown and a chair rail.

This corner took a long time, but I love it and now stare at it....a lot

I love the way it turns the corner. Do you stop during a project to admire you own work? The work that nobody else in the family will notice. The work that makes you feel like you do more than just laundry and cooking.

Moving on, after my dresser disaster, I put these two rejects potential projects out at the curb.

I always put my decent stuff out a day before bulky trash because I want it to be picked up and recycled. I am happy to report that within an hour, a local landscapers' crew picked them up! Look for them on another blog real soon.

Hola chicos, me encantaría ver lo que haces con las piezas ... me envíen una foto.

As for me, 2 Malm dressers from Ikea will do just fine.

If the humidity ever decreases, I will finish painting them the perfect shad of mint

BM 568 Parkside Dunes
I wish I had more finished things to show you. I do have a Lowe's Gift Card Giveaway going on, if you are feeling lucky?

I'm off to visit the others....just as soon as I get this Lyme Disease carrying creature out of my yard

Now let's go see if the other rooms are at the "fluffing" stage

                                        Chinoiserie Chic                        Nana Moon
The Cottage Mix                       Nicole Scott Designs

           Design Indulgence                    Pawleys Island Posh
    Everything LEB                            The Pink Pagoda
                       Hodge:Podge                           Powell Brower Home
Kim Macumber Interiors                 The Pursuit of Style
Lisa Mende Design                      Rue de Emily
               Living Savvy                                Sadie + Stella

Lowe's Gift Card Giveaway....my challenge!

Update - Gift Card Winner
Congratulations Michelle!!

Hello Friends! It is time for another Lowe's Garden Challenge! Yes, I am taking a quick break from the One Room Challenge to venture outside in this oppressive, humid, yucky weather....AND I am going to motivate you into tackling a project of your own...but for now, just watch me do it. As promised, at the end of my song and dance, there will be a chance for you to win this

First, my Lowe's sponsored challenge: To tackle a tough spot in my yard, and solve a problem.

So many to choose from, but this one has been bothering me for quite some time

My sweet little garden shed has lost its curb appeal. Since this is the view from my kitchen window it's time to improve my view or invest in blinds.

Here is the plan

First up, the window boxes. Now, if by some unexplained chance this is your first time visiting my blog, I will let you in on a small fact about me....I am obsessed with window boxes!! Here are my Spring window boxes.

I don't know about you, but I need my window boxes to last a long time. That is why I like to use this stuff.

PVC boards. They are rot free, and will stand up to all weather conditions. Further more...no painting! I used the 7 1/2" widths for the front and back. I used the 5 1/2" for the bottom and sides.

Simple box construction (don't forget to drill drainage holes in the bottom) and now I have this
I like how the faux woodgrain matches the grain of my shed. However, you can get this product in a smooth finish, too.

For the stepping stones, I like these

It looks like this
By adding mulch in-between the joints it gives the look of individual stones.

A few new plants, two bags of mulch and a whole lot of water breaks...
and I went from this

to this

Now, the moment you have all been waiting for....how you can enter the Lowe's $50 Gift Card Giveaway!
