How To Care For Cut Hydrangeas

Today, I am borrowing a post from my blogging friend, Mimi. She is always posting great floral tips for your own arrangements. Like the time she convinced me to try this one. Recently, I received a question about how to care for cut hydrangeas on the Hydrangea Centerpiece post that I did.

So here is Mimi's answer

How To Care For Cut Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are beautiful, but they do require a little special care. Follow these steps below and enjoy:

Orange white and gold flowers

8 Tips for Caring for Cut Hydrangea
1) Purchase hydrangea from places that always sell fresh flowers. Hydrangeas, or any flower really, purchased from shops that sell old, poor quality flowers won't last long.
2) Buy hydrangeas that look full. There should be no brown spots. No wilting or gaps between the flowers either.
3) Fill a clean vase with room temperature water.Hydrangeas are big drinkers. So don't skimp on the water.
4) Add a little floral preservative. Yes, use that little packet that comes with the flowers. It helps the flowers last longer. I use it all the time.
5) Don't smash the stems with a hammer. That's old school advice. It destroys the cell structure of the hydrangea stem.
Instead, just cut the stem twice. The first cut should be on the angle. The second cut should be a vertical one at the bottom of the stem.
6) Spray the hydrangea blooms with water.Remember, hydrangeas are really thirsty.
7) Place hydrangeas in a cool spot. Away from the sun and other sources of heat.
8) Change the water. Remove hydrangea from the vase. Wash the vase with soap and water. Repeat steps 3-5 above.

Now for a quick tip, find out how to make a 5 Minute Flower Arrangement.

Friday's In the Garden....I'll Get You, My Pretty

Hi Everyone, Yeah...it's Friday, and I can't wait for the weekend. The weather is finally spectacular. It has been in the high 70's with NO humidity. This picture, that I use every week, is from last year

Those are stunning Electric Blanket ground cover roses....only the deer ate the blooms.

Who me? It could have been the rabbits

BUT...this year, I have been spraying my garden with this

...and my roses look like this

A better view

It is a miracle....actually, this is a miracle...this clematis has not bloomed in 2, maybe 3, years

Anyone know the name? Here are some of my white Flower Carpet roses

I need some plant recommendations for this area. The azalea's are not happy, and need to be moved

Something on the low side, full sun, an evergreen would be a plus

My Caradona salvia is super happy....and so is the big weed

...but from this angle, only you know it is there

Enjoy your weekend, Friends....these are not my friends.

String Basket

I finally finished something around this place. Do you remember when I told you that this inspired me? Well, here is my interpretation of that

I added the string (aka floss) treatment to the rim of a basket. By the way, look how well my plant is doing....I think it is because I did not plant it.

On a recent trip to Goodwill, I picked up this sad little holiday basket

I cut off the dried cinnamon sticks and ribbon, and added a couple of decorative beads along with some gold floss.

Then I randomly chose colorful floss to stitch around the rim of the top

I must admit, I forgot how much I enjoy mindless needlework. I think the entire project took a couple of Dancing With The Stars episodes....and voila. Now what other projects would you wrap with string?

Two Good to be Tuesday

I am so glad it is a short week. This hot weather makes me want to be lazy. On Friday, just before the long weekend, I scored these two lovelies on CL.

I was so nervous when I saw the listing just one hour after it was posted. I have been looking for a pair of mirrors for the longest time. Thanks to an app similar to this one, I got in first. I think I want to put them over my nightstands in my bedroom, but I am not positive. Because of the faux bamboo detailing

It reminds me of some mirrors I have seen around
