The Pampered Guest

And just like that...

.

I am happy it's Monday! I know that so many of you dislike Mondays, so don't worry, Tuesday will be here before you know it. I have a 'no laundry on Monday' policy and I usually don't cook

very often

on Monday, either. See why I like Mondays? You may borrow that

...

you're welcome!

As I told you, Friday, I loved hearing

Dean Farris

talk about

'The Pampered Guest'

.

Dean recommends the following; using this Givenchy guest room as an example...

Bunny Mellon Guest Room by Givenchy

wallpaper

shows your guests that you care. Reading lamps, scented candles, and additional seating help create a luxurious layered room.

Amanda Nisbet

Blackout shades, fresh flowers, and an extra blanket are details your guests will appreciate.

Frances Herrera

A desk with stationary and a place for a laptop is practical and thoughtful.

Show the sheets! And have them pressed!

The most important question to ask yourself when creating a pampered guest room is, 'How long do you want them to stay?'

I know I would love to stay in a guest room with this much thought. What do you like to do for your guests?

Home Goals Review....Post of Shame

Clearly, last January when I posted my 2012 Home Goals.....I was feeling quite optimistic. Needless to say, I over promised and under delivered.

Let's review, and then I will set myself up again!

1). Finish my dining room....I did that one.

You can see more of it here.

2). The All White Foyer.....BIG FAIL. I still haven't done that one. You must be sick of  hearing about it. I have devoted an entire Pinterest board to it. Pick an image...any image

White walls, colorful rug, dark banister....I want one.

3). Adding a gallery wall to my upstairs hallway.....BIG FAIL. Didn't happen, enough said. Here was the inspiration for that one.

4) Finish my master bedroom...I did that one.

You can see more of it here.

Finally #5). A Potager Garden.....BIG FAIL. I also have an entire Pinterest board for that one, too. Again, pick an image....any image. Pea gravel paths, raised beds and a white fence.

This is the current state of my vegetable garden.

Now doesn't this make you feel better about your own goals?

Tomorrow, I will state my new 2013 Home Goals. Are you setting goals for 2013?

Powell Brower Home is Here...Guest Post

I am so excited to have Nancy & Bethany here from

I created this board for my new blogger friend Linda, who created the One Room Challenge that we are all crazed about! By the way, the final reveal is August 1, so there are only 2 weeks left! She is so busy building, doing carpentry and making over her huge master bedroom, that I thought I'd help her out (if it were only that easy) and do a design board for her room. This is what I envision her room to look like after our many conversations of her dream bedroom.

The idea is to have a neutral palette, blush colored walls, lots of texture and layers, quality built-ins and a huge focal point of a wooden plank ceiling; finishing with pops of mint green and coral. It sounds amazing, and I hope she gets the retreat she deserves! Good luck with the final push Linda!

Thanks Nancy....I will use this beautiful design to help me pull it all together. What do all of you think? Any other suggestions?

One Room Challenge...Week 3

Thanks for coming back and checking in on my progress with the One Room Challenge. In case you are new to my blog, you can start the challenge, here. When you last saw my room, I was in the middle of crown molding. I am happy to report that it's done!

I will not lie, that crown molding was one of the toughest things I have ever done. I did not enjoy the process. I don't care if I learned more useless knowledge, because.....I have no intention of doing that again any time soon. Although I have this strange feeling that, like childbirth I might forget.

I am having the ceiling professionally painted, I hope. No surprise, dealing with painting contractors has been challenging, to say the least. Let's just say that this time, I am waiting for my first choice.  However, to get back on track with the non-existent budget, I will be rolling the walls, myself. You can see on the right, a color I am considering.

This is the television side.

Here are the built-ins that Rod put together from Ikea cabinets. The flimsy cardboard backs are bothering me.....and this is why I have no idea, husband, when we will be moving back in.

They still need to be trimmed out, and Rod doesn't do that.

This is my favorite view. I love the way all the lines of the planks come together.

Now would be a good time to think of a color pallet...ya think?
For the walls, I'm using this
Opal color that Jenny used here

the nightstands will be mint

A pop of coral, somewhere

And whatever else I stumble upon in the next few weeks. Of course all of this is subject to change....just because.

I want to take a second and give a quick thank you to Manidi, from Interior Design Musings, for mentioning the One Room Challenge.

Now, I'm not in this alone...let's go see how the others are doing

One Room Challenge....week 2

What a week!! In case you are new here, this is week two of the One Room Challenge....you can start the challenge, here.  I was off to a great start, that was too good to be true. We relocated ourselves to the guest bedroom. I need to make a public apology to my house guests....I'm sorry, I had no idea that bed was that uncomfortable. Is that the reason why you never stay that long?

Anyway, first up was my electrician, Chad.

He's great, and never questions my crazy ideas....and as long as they meet code, he's good.
Remember these problems

Now, it looks like this

The light was moved closer, and lower. The switch was moved closer. The plug was moved to the right so that it would be behind the bed,and not the nightstand.
Please, let this be in the right spot when it is put back together!

Onto the ceiling....I have been up and down on the ladder, installing planks on the ceiling like I did in my basement, and dining room

I just need to trim it out.

Now, for the major setback of the week

Jim the contractor

Feeling over my head {pun intended}, I decided to have the crown molding installed, professionally. My favorite contractor, Joe....could not squeeze me in. My second choice, handyman Rod....was not able to come, either. So, Rod, recommended Jim for the crown molding. Note to self; when your second choice has a recommendation, that is just too many degrees of separation from your first choice!

It started off bad, and got seriously worse. After four hours of work, Jim had cut the following "test samples" for the corners and returns
Yes, what you are looking at is every possible angle combination....44, 45, 46, 47 degree angles. Why? Because Jim says, "this is how I always do it". "Your walls are not square and your ceiling is not level".

My reply
THIS CAN'T BE THE FIRST HOUSE YOU WORKED ON WITH THAT PROBLEM!!

Very calmly, Jim said, "If you know of someone else who can do this, get them".

Bye, bye, Jim.....I'm doing it myself. The next morning, I was off to Lowe's to replace the crown pieces Jim wasted with his practice cuts. While I was standing in the check out line, I received the following text message from my daughter at Tennis day-camp;

"Going inside..No one knows y...Police and Swat team came and made us leave and there are helicopters above. Don't worry it will be fine just letin u know"

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. Of course I worried for the next hour, while I texted my daughter. They received the "all clear" and returned to the courts. Later that evening, we heard on the news that an elderly man committed suicide in his backyard because of declining health issues.

As for the crown molding, here is what I have done so far

I attached the bottom step in the crown treatment to the wall. By getting this as level as possible, your eye would think that the ceiling was perfectly level.  Are you listening, Jim?

Next, I started applying the crown
I am about half way done with the crown....and behind schedule. Rod, second choice contractor, will be coming in a few days to hack the Ikea cabinets into built-ins. He said, "sorry about Jim, but that is how I would have done it, too".  Yes, Rod, that is why you are my second choice.

Joe, I need you!

The moral of this tale, all the good contractors are busy! Now, let's go check out the others, and see if they had a better week.....Happy 4th of July, by the way.

For Week 3, go here

The One Room Challenge

Welcome to the One Room Challenge. This is an opportunity for DIY-ers and Designers to work in tandem, while finishing a room in their home. Each blogger will be posing their progress every Wednesday... and maybe even a few updates in between. Without further ado.....here are the participants

As you can only imagine, trying to coordinate posting schedules for a group this large, was nearly impossible...  not to mention the fact that this runs over The Fourth of July and Canada Day. Therefore, unlike the first ORC, each blogger was given the flexibility to work at their own pace as their summer schedule permitted. Some people joined the group as recent as a few days ago! The overall goal is unanimous...to entertain and inspire you with our best attempt!

Updates: Week 2.... Week 3 ....Week 4.....Week 5....Week 6

Let the games begin....

I will be tackling my master bedroom. It is number 4 on my Home Goals for 2012.  I have procrastinated on this room for four years. just like many of the men I have dated, It has so much potential.

Starting with the positives....I love my Tommy Bahama bed. OK, that is all the nice things I have to say. Here are my annoyances with this part of the room

Here are a few real problems

The light switch is so far away, I fall out of bed when I reach over to turn it off. The swing arms on the fixture are not long enough to be useful. The cords are like that because the outlet is behind the dresser and the cords are too thick and need to be put on an extension cord.

Now for this side of the room

Again, with the positives...I love the ceiling detail and the big window. The pineapple chandelier has potential...again with the potential.

My plan for this side

The final corner....the one that I feel I will be judged over. Yes, people...I have a large television in my bedroom. I also have a few bits of exercise equipment that I don't intend on using. I will not make excuses for the television....I have a ton of excuses for the exercise equipment.

What do I like about this corner....that ehffing tv! In fact, I was never "Tardy for the Wedding" on this baby.

My plan for this corner

I wold make a list...but I don't want that level of accountability.

One quick pole, before you go....How wold you update this chandelier?

I am open to all your suggestions....except the trash, my husband already voted for that!

Now, let's go check out all the other bloggers, and see what kind of rooms they are working on.
