New York Flea Market

This may sound crazy, but until a few weeks ago, I had never been to any of the NY Flea Markets. Crazy, because they are only 40 minutes away. For the longest time, I would try to get one of my friends to go with me. Sadly, my friends have no interest in this type of adventure.

Since I needed to go to Mood Fabrics for a fresh looking yard or two of something... I decided to combine the trip. Being geographically conscious,  I chose the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. It was a short walk to Mood, so I would only need to pay for parking once.

I arrived slightly after 9am on a Saturday and parked in a lot just 2 blocks away. It was a bit confusing as to which direction to go, but thankfully my walking map on my phone worked great. Here are some images I snapped while I hunted.

It's a real mix of vintage clothing

Bits and pieces of furniture

Old bottles, and other collectibles like matchbooks

I was really interested in the African artifacts from these dudes

But once I asked a few prices, it became clear that they were smoking the hashish pipe

Lots of costume and vintage jewelry

Painted re-purposed odds and ends

Books....and of course

A dead animal, or two.

I bought a few bits of odds and ends, but overall, I was not impressed. The prices were much more in line with New York than a true Flea Market. Next time, I'm going to try this one

Tomorrow, I will tell you all about my fabric shopping at Mood. Do you have a favorite Flea Market?

You are too funny! Love me some Mood Fabrics, that is for sure. There is nothing worse than me attending a flea market with high prices. Defeats the purpose. Hello..

I hate when the vendors are smokin the crack. No good deals to have. My DREAM is to go to Mood one day - for hours probably. What a treat.

Well at least you crossed going to the NY Flea Market off your bucket list, right? Too bad there were no insanely cheap treasures to be had, but it was an experience! What is this Mood Fabrics all about? Do tell.

Oh, I love those vintage glass bottles! I can see how the prices would be high in NYC. There is a great flea / antiques market in Georgetown, DC.

Bummer! I would love to go to the longest yard sale (now 690 miles!) one summer.
Can't wait to see what you got from Mood.

I went to that flea market once...and you cannot find a deal there at all!! Not worth it and I found it very small.

Bummer indeed. I love flea markets and I don't know if it's the same out there, but the spring is usually the best time to score. I want to visit Danylle...looks like there are some killer country ones out in her neck of the woods! Don't give up! Ummm fabric talk.. yes please.

I can't get any of my friends to go either and I am only an hour away (or to dim sum, my favorite brunch)...nothing like a fun antiques flea market to hunt for treasures! Glad to see you're up and running...

When I went to the Hell's Kitchen flea market I wasn't impressed either. I used to go the The Annex Flea Market for years. Way before all of those towering luxury buildings were built. They used to be unused parking lots on the weekends. The area was full of them. So between construction and folks getting into selling things on ebay, it's not easy to find great stuff dirt cheap anymore. I shop more neighborhood thrift shops now

No good flea market's here. Many vendors are putting out wares they assume are valuable because they are dated. I'm a Craigslist girl.

Looks like it was a fun adventure even if you didn't take anything home.

I would have gone with you...as we've said before, we could get in some real trouble together. I think you just have to keep trying different markets, but my guess is anything near NYC is pricey...I want to see your fabric post please!
Glad youre back, I REALLY missed you.

There are not any fab flea markets around here - so I tend to do the regular thrift stores and estate sales. Their prices have gotten high too, and I've found I can find better stuff at better prices at the local antique malls. I can't believe you're going to Mood! Say hi to Tim Gunn for me!

I'm pretty jealous that you're so close to the city. I'd be there every weekend! Can't wait to see the fabric post!

what are the odds--I went to the Rose Bowl Flea market this weekend! It was great shopping but not very cheap and not nearly as much furniture as I was expecting. Fun, though :-)

Despite living within 8 miles of NYC for years, I too never got around to any flea markets (or Mood, for that matter). Hope you found something yummy at Mood!

I love Mood Fabrics!!! My problem is trying to make a decision because they have so much freaking goodness! I was sitting here thinking how much I wish I was there and then you said it was overpriced so that cured me! LOL

Jealous about Mood! Sorry the flea was a let down. The Nashville flea can be hit or miss as well but the prices are usually good. Maybe you should come down for a visit :) Brandy

LOVE that place!!!!

Some flea markets can be frightening. I try to only go to girly markets/shows like Farm Chicks or Funky Junk Antiques, that way I know what I am getting. Glad to see you back blogging! Hope all is well in New Jersey.

The garage is a lot of fun. I try to stop there when I go to the furniture fair every spring. I've only been to the HK flea market once but it had a lot of {expensive} things that I loved. I also like to go to Brimfield on the last day. :)
