Day 8...No Power

Some of you may think that I was taking some time off....I wish.

I have been trying to figure out how to function without power. Hurricane Sandy hit my town hard. I am extremely fortunate that my family and home are fine. My neighbors were not as lucky. Several of my friends have damage to their homes. It will be a long time before some of them can move back in.

To give you a quick overview...NO, we don't have a generator. I have turned down 3 offers. I have a high-efficiency heating system that supports the hot water, radiant floor heat, and furnace....so it is too complicated to plug into a portable generator. I could continue with other reasons, but trust me when I say it is too complicated. We have been sleeping in our home. It is too painful to leave our dog, Buster and once you snuggle under all the blankets, it is actually quite cozy. Getting up in the morning is the difficult part. Sadly, it is too cold for this to continue, so other arrangements will need to be made.

Gasoline rationing has begun. We have odd/even days, like the 70's. Today, it only took a half an hour to get gas. I feel fortunate...although I was in a hurry to go nowhere. Several days ago my In-Laws Fed Exed us some flashlights....thanks H & A! There have been a hundred acts of kindness like this, that keep me going. School was cancelled again, today. That is a total of 6 days of missed school.

I am currently sitting in my friend's home. She has power and Wi Fi....thanks Lisa!

As for Orange and Rockland Electric....YOU SUCK! You already know this because NY Governor Cuomo has told you this publicly, several times. Although you don't have the ability to update us with real and accurate estimations on the status of our power, you do have the time to put some idiot PR person on the radio to combat Cuomos' remarks. Obviously having an energy company that straddles three states (Norther NJ, Southern NY, and Eastern Pennsylvania) only benefits the energy company. Who fights for the people? My Governor, Christie is too busy at the shore. By the way, I was the one to call the police on your SLEEPING guard that sits in front of my home to warn people about the live wires in the street. Just curious....how does he warn people when he sleeps? This morning there were 4 of them standing around. Another example of funds well distributed.

Before I show you the devastation in my neighborhood, I thought it would be interesting to see how much the CEO of Orange & Rockland Electric made last year. The year that we lost power for 6 days.

Mr. William Longhi, CEO.....Total Compensation for 2011...$3,108,292.

Mr. Longhi, not updating your software system for "real time" "full transparency" information, as Governor Christie puts it,  like your NJ counterparts is completely unacceptable. I am glad to see that you are on Twitter....tweet tweet.

And now for the devastation in my Hood

Thank you so much for all of your kind emals, thoughts, and prayers. I am overwhelmed by the outreach from all of you. I will be back as soon as possible.

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, I apologize for the series of harassing tweets that are about to come.

Oh my Gosh Linda! The hurricane hit your neighborhood so hard and so close to your home. I'm so glad you and your family are ok. Hope everyone in the hood will be soon over the bad circumstances.

Linda I have been thinking about you and your family over the past week, so I am glad to hear that you are all safe and have fared reasonably well. What a mess. How frustrating to be without power for so long and to witness the ineptitude of your power company. I too, would be making some noise (tweet, tweet) about the irony of this situation and like Nancy, I hope your voice is one of many to force a change. Sounds like you are making the best of things and will continue to do so.

I'm glad you're OK, and I hope you get power back soon. Living in the midwest, I'm no stranger to power outages but it's never been out for eight days. I can't even imagine. Give them hell on Twitter!

I'm so glad to hear from you - I've been wondering how you were doing. I'm glad everyone is fine and your house survived. I can't believe the damage I've seen in some of the pictures. I can't believe your power company - I'd be making lots of noise too! Keep us updated and let me know if you need anything!

Linda, I am so sorry to hear how badly your town was hit, and for the damage to your friends' and neighbors' homes. I hope your power is restored soon, and your sanity. What a shame that the utilities companies are handling this crisis so badly. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear this Linda - I figured you had no power because you weren't online but it looks worse than I thought. I sure hope they can restore it soon. It's one thing to live without power in the south after a hurricane but quite another in a colder climate in November. I feel for you so much. Is there anything you need that I can send you?

Glad to hear that your family and your home are unharmed, but am sad that you are still dealing with this disaster. I hope that help comes soon to you and your neighbors.

Your pictures of your neighborhood are sad...So happy to hear that you and your family are safe. No power after 8 days can test your sanity. (We went 14 days during Fran.) I've been thinking about you since Sandy. Stay strong, Sistah! Keep kicking ass until you get results. Would a care package of batteries help? Please let me know if there is anything I can send.

Nope, didn't think you were taking time off, such a relief to hear you're all safe, but seeing the devastation makes my heart ache for your neighbors and all that they face. Sorry about the issues with your power company...snuggle up with your fam and Buster! Sending prayers your way, thanks for taking time to give us an update.

Linda, I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. Sandy was a royal BITCH. We got hit hard as well but nothing like what you're going through. If there is anything I can do to help you or if you just need to rant, I'm here for you.

Linda, I am sorry for your situation but I am glad everyone in your family is safe. I absolutely understand your frustration with the utility company because no updates on your power status for 8 days is unacceptable! Hopefully, everything will improve soon! Take care!

Oh my God Linda, I never realized how much you were affected, haven't been blogging for a while because of a lot of happenings in my own life, but I am glad you are safe and I hope these inconveniences will resolve soon for you and everyone else affected. I am still thankful all the people I know on the east coast are SAFE and HEALTHY. You take care, you and your family, will be in my prayers.. :-)

Linda, I had no idea you were suffering like this! The damage and devastation is so widespread, and I hear its getting colder up there this week. Hope you and your family find a warm and comfortable place to ride this out until your power is restored. 8 days without power is about 7 days too long. Hope it all gets resolved soon. Take good care of each other.

Stay strong.. I'm in NJ too. My family is still without power. It's getting hard now that it's getting colder out. Eventually we'll all get power back.

I'm so sorry to hear that you were affected by Sandy. I know it is so difficult to see the destruction all around you. Hope your power is restored soon.

That doesn't sound or look fun at all. Your power company does suck, tweet away! I'm fortunate to live in a place with a municipal power company so it's rare to be out of power for more than a short time {a few hours, really}. But my sister who is a few towns away has a large company that is as terrible as yours. I hope things get better for you!

Just a though, it's the off season on Nantucket so it might be a good time for a vacation.

Oh my lord Linda that looks terrible! I hope you're doing okay, my thoughts are with you! :(

Linda, I am so sorry to bear that you are without power. I've been praying for all of those who've sustained loses of any kind. Very different when it's someone you know. My friend lost her home in Westchester. I pray power is restored in your neighborhood soon. Keep warm. Mimi

Holy devastation.....I am so sorry that you are having to deal with all of this. I get so bent out of shape when I have to deal with Power companies....Cable companies etc.....It frustrates me to no end. I say tweet away and be mean. 8 days with out power is not acceptable....especially without some estimates of when it will be back on.

Oh my goodness Linda. I am soooo sorry that you have to go through all of this. I remember when we lived in Virginia we lived through a tornado that tore through town but we only lost power for a day and the devastation was not so severe! Sending my thoughts and prayers your way, to you and all the east coast that was hit hard!

Tenha um abençoado fim de semana.
