There are some plants that I definitely took for granted when I lived in a warmer climate. As many of you gardeners know, you just can't grow everything...everywhere. Of all the perennials I miss, I would have to say that Bougenvilla's are on the top of the list.
They grow like weeds in many parts of the country. In fact, my parents took theirs out because they kept getting too big. Here in NJ, you can get them but you would need to overwinter them.....and that is a real pain. I did try for two winters, and it just wasn't happy.
Here are some of the fabulous colors they come in
Have a great weekend!

I love it too but you know I am garden challenged. Would it grow in Virginia? I am supposedly in zone 7A.
This totally reminds me of going to my grandmother's house in Palm Springs. Love it.
When we lived in California, our house had a Bougenvilla as it's front hedge. It was so beautiful! There's no way I could get one to stay alive here in New England unfortunately.
Absolutely beautiful! I'm so envious! They don't grow in NC (as far as I know). The are like soft sculpture for your landscape!
We have one of those in our front yard! I never knew what it was called. Ours is a purple-pink color, kinda like the top picture. That sucker is hardy too. I've never watered it and I do a horrible job trimming it, but it still grows like crazy! My kind of plant!
If you've ever been to Ford's and Edison's home in Ft Myers (they were neighbors)you would of seen the most unbelievable Bougainvillea. I was told Edison brought them over from the Islands...don't know which Islands. http://www.edisonfordwinterestates.org/ I can't grow it here in North Central Florida because of my soil. But I keep trying! Frustrating!
Oh they are beautiful...the colors are amazing! I can't grow weeds! I enjoy seeing others' beautiful gardens! I have two planters on our terrace with a flower that survives in hot sun...don't know the name, but it lives and is pink. Our front door is graced with two ferns in similar planters. They are still alive after four months, which is remarkable.
wow, those are beautiful. No luck with them here either.Have a great weekend Linda. I know what you'll be doing!

I am with you girlfriend!! Miss them too! In fact I get so desperate I still buy them for my pots in the Summer...
I love them too! We had a fabulous one in Long Beach that covered our front porch. I sure miss being able to grow them, but have tried overwintering them here too and it's a pain...
Have a great day.
