Please Help Me...What Do You Use This For?

OK, I am feeling confident that someone will know the answer. I received a grouping of these from my In-Law's when they down-sized

They are lovely and obviously meant for a place setting. They are also small and bowl shaped

What do you think was the original intent for them?

Give it your best guess...I don't know.

My guesses would be they were either for Asian dipping sauces or were filled with water and a lemon for a quick rinse of the fingers - little bowls are used in some Asian cultures for that.

I really think that they are individual salt cellars. You would place a bit of salt and tiny spoon at each place and its supposed to be more sumptuous for everyone to have their own. They would be adorable with some real grass and teeny tiny Easter egg candies in them.

Sorbet? Nuts? Swimming pool for dolls? I'm stumped.

I am stumped too ... but my first thought was the same as Kerry ... little easter eggs or jelly beans. I only wish I was as clever as she to figure out the individual Salt Cellars ... love that !!

My guess would be for used tea bags and to rest your spoon on after you have prepared your tea. I like Kim's idea for jelly beans and especially molly's swimming pool for dolls. haha.

I think these might be for the eggs when you have breakfast but I could be wrong. :)

Love reading all the readers' comments by the way!

I knew when I saw this post I would know the person with the answer - my mom. This woman has, I am not lying, 14 different FULL sets of different antique patterns of china. Here is her response - " I am sure those are nut dishes. If you had a party, especially a card party, you would put these on the table at each persons place and fill them with mixed nuts or mints, etc. Those were the days. All you had to do was play bridge all afternoon while Bridget served a lunch of chicken salad and and tomato aspic. Don't forget to wear you pearls." :)

My first thought was either nut dish or finger bowl. I've never seen either with a handle like that, though.

I'd say mints.

You made me laugh.

Wow, thanks Elizabeth. When I read this I thought of the women from the movie "The Help" and how they played cards exactly how you described it. I have a feeling your mom is exactly right. By the way....does your mom entertain that much?

Yay! solved! I had to come back and find out if anyone knew the answer. All I can think now is, how in the world do you store them? They must be a pain, you can't stack them.

My first thought was, what the hell are those? They look like little easter baskets. I'm glad you have more knowledgeable/helpful blog friends than me cause I have no clue.

So then what are they for I still can't figure it out haha

My mom used to have those very card parties - minus the maids and racism :). She doesn't as much anymore, but she is quite the entertainer for sure!

My grandmother used to have a couple sets of baskets (enough for all 20 of us). She would set them at each place and put candy (i.e. jelly beans, m&ms)and nuts in them.
